Conference: Independence and Decolonization, April 15-17, 2010

On March 2, KLRU will commemorate Texas Independents’ Day by celebrating the work of three local filmmakers whose work has reached a national audience on PBS. For the first time ever, three Austin-based projects have been selected for PBS’s Emmy-award winning series Independent Lens.

Filmmaker and University of Texas Professor, Paul Stekler will moderate a panel discussion with Michel O. Scott (The Horse Boy), Karen Skloss (Sunshine), and Keith Maitland (The Eyes of Me) starting at 8 p.m. Following the discussion, KLRU will host a screening of the Independent Lens broadcast of The Eyes of Me at 9 p.m. RSVP here

Africa Conference: Women, Gender and Sexualities in Africa

This year’s theme is Women, Gender, and Sexualities in Africa, and it is our 10th annual African conference at The University of Texas at Austin.  This year, we are extremely excited about the conference because of the large number of participants it has attracted and we hope it will live up to the success of the previous nine conferences. The abstracts that we have received are not only impressive, but diverse as well.

Issues involving Women, Gender, and Sexualities remain a vital component of the daily lives for most peoples across the globe and in particular for many Africans. The submitted abstracts look to ignite lively and interesting debates, and the panels will reflect the diverse and expansive effects popular cultures have made throughout Africa and across the world. This year’s conference will bring together distinguished scholars from various disciplines, countries, and backgrounds. We anticipate thought-provoking discussions to occur during the conference.

Some things to keep in mind: the people you refer must be new to YouJustGetMe, so get out there and invite some new folks! We base our decision off of the average of all 4 of your guesses with each other, so make sure that all of you guess each other before you mail us. Is your husband, mother, or nosy Aunt Dorothy already on YouJustGetMe? Don’t worry, you can include them in your group even if you’ve already guessed each other – it is the holiday, after all, and we can be generous. However, each group must include a minimum of 2 new users.
